The importance of Intelligence in Shia narrations  – 5

H 5, Ch. 1, h 5

It is narrated from him by Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Faddal from al-Hassan ibn al-Juham, who has said the following:

“I said to Abu al-Hassan (Imam Sadiq (A)), “We know certain people who have a great deal of love, but they do not have much determination (and understanding of the cause of Imamat).” The Imam replied, “They are not of the ones Allah admonished. Allah said, “People of Intelligence and understanding must take a lesson”[1] (Al-Hashr:2).

Explanation

In explaining this narration, we must state that: If love is true love, it has effects. A lover has feelings toward his lover; he makes sacrifices for his lover. This love should show some effects on someone who loves the Ahl al-Bayt. They say: We love you, but there is no effect on their love. Can we count these people as Shia? Imam (A) replied These are not the ones to be addressed by God. God is admonishing the people of Insight and true Shias. Other people benefitted, to the extent that they have a love for us. But the ones whom God addresses, are the ones who have insight and intelligence. A narration says, “God never entrusts the position of “Wilayat” (Guardianship) to an ignorant person”[2]. God does not accept any guardian who is ignorant. The “knowledgeable” does not necessarily mean the person who studied. Many doctors are ignorant. Some sweepers and workers are wise and knowledgeable. So, It is not true that anyone who studied books and got college degrees is wise. We explained in the previous narration that,  A wise person has modesty toward his superiors and does the right things and customs towards his subordinates. “Wise” is the one who sees God present. People who do not have such characteristics are not wise, even if they pray a lot and take care of their religion. These people have religion but are not ashamed of God because they do not see God’s presence. Therefore, they are not considered wise. They are not considered to be among the people God is admonishing.

Many human beings have not exceeded the capacity of animals, meaning they are not higher level than animals even though they get dressed, sit behind the computer, and ride in the car. You might teach a monkey that he can do many of these things. These are not proofs of humanity. Animals also have lust, animals also have anger, and they also eat, sleep, and rest. These humans are smarter animals than other animals. Wise people perceive things beyond the material world.
