Governments in Surah An-Naml

“Naml” in Arabic means ant and God named a Surah of the Holy Quran after this animal. Interestingly, in this surah of the Holy Quran, God has mentioned great governments and has placed the government of the ants next to them.

The first government mentioned in this surah is the government of the Prophet Solomon (A), which was the greatest of the governments of the world so far because Prophet Solomon (A) asked God to grant him a government that no one belongs to anyone after him.

He said, ‘My Lord, forgive me and grant me a kingdom such as will not belong to anyone after me. Indeed, You are the Bestower’” (Sad:35). It is worth mentioning that Prophet Solomon (A) asked for forgiveness first then later for the greatest government.

Until now, the world has not seen a government like the government of Prophet Solomon (A), in which rocks, birds, humans, and devils were under his command.

The other government mentioned in this surah is the government of “Saba”, which was in control of Bilqis, who had everything and had a huge throne. “Indeed, I found [there] a woman ruling them, and she has been given of all things, and she has a great throne” (An-Naml:23). There is another government in this surah that is less noticed and that is the government of ants, it should be noted that this government is between the government of Prophet Solomon (A) and the government of Bilqis. The government of Solomon (A) was the government of the prophet and the righteous, and the government of Bilqis was the government of the polytheists and infidels. The government of the ants was an underground government; meaning, the kingdom of the believers.

Therefore, it is not the government of the prophets, nor the government of the polytheists, but a government that is not in conflict with the earthly kingdoms, because this is their slogan, “O ants, enter your dwellings that you not be crushed by Solomon and his soldiers while they perceive not” (An-Naml:18).

This government that commands you not to leave your homes is the government of the believers who do not leave until the savior comes and they know that if they leave, they will be crushed.

So, under the earth, they have a hidden government, a community, and a leader who they obey his commands. A Tradition from Imam Mahdi (AJ) says, “In the events, return to the narrators of our hadiths, they are my “Hojjat” (reason) for you, and I am “Hojjat” (reason) of God”. This is the authority of the secret kingdom and government until the coming of the savior (Imam Mahdi (AJ)).

All praise is to God to the extent that He deserves it.
